Set amid the canals of Venice, Italy, this Pixar film follows Nero, a scrappy black stray cat who has grown weary of city life and begins to question whether he's been living the right of his nine lives. Indebted to Rocco, a local feline mob boss, Nero is forced into an unlikely friendship with Maya, a lonely human street artist who adopts him against his will, setting him on a path toward discovering his true purpose. Blending a striking hand-painted 2D art style with computer animation, the film explores themes of identity, self-discovery, found family, and second chances, all set against a richly detailed depiction of Italian culture and folklore. As with Pixar's earlier Italy-set film Luca, the story emphasizes cross-species and cross-generational friendship as a path to personal growth.
