The One and Only Ivan
by Katherine Applegate
Based on a true story, this novel follows Ivan, a silverback gorilla who lives in a shopping mall display with other animals including Stella the elephant and Bob the dog. When a baby elephant named Ruby arrives, Ivan must confront his past and find a way to save his friends from their captive situation. The story explores themes of friendship, captivity versus freedom, animal rights, and finding one's voice to protect those we love. This Newbery Medal winner sensitively addresses issues of animal welfare and the importance of speaking up for those who cannot speak for themselves.
