Liar & Spy
by Rebecca Stead
When seventh-grader Georges moves to a new apartment building, he befriends his upstairs neighbor Safer, who recruits him into a spy mission to watch a mysterious neighbor they call 'Mr. X.' The story explores themes of friendship, bullying, family financial struggles, and finding one's place while dealing with middle school challenges. Georges faces bullying at school while his family adjusts to his father's unemployment, and through his friendship with the eccentric Safer, he learns about courage, truth, and standing up for what's right.
